Biography

Paolo Cherchi Usai is one of the world's leading experts in cinema. He co-founded the Pordenone Silent Film Festival and the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation, an institution of the George Eastman House in Rochester (New York), where he currently serves as Senior Curator of Motion Pictures. He is the editor of the journal Segnocinema, and the author of various monographs such as The Death of Cinema, with preface by Martin Scorsese (London, BFI, 2008) or Burning Passions (London, BFI, 1994). He also coordinated The Griffith Project (London, BFI, 1999-2008) a collection of 12 volumes with 35 specialists analyzing all of D. W. Griffith’s films and has directed two experimental full-length movies: Passio (2007) and Picture (2015), with music respectively performed by Arvo Pärt and the Alloy Orchestra.
