José Manuel Durão Barroso graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and holds an MSc in Economic and Social Sciences from the U-niversity of Geneva (Institut universitaire d’Études européennes de l’université de Genève), when he was professor Dusan Sjdjanski’s assistant. He continued his studies at Georgetown University. Doctor Honoris causa from several universities all around the world, he has authored, among other texts, Le système politique portugais face à l’intégration européenne (1983), Uma Certa Ideia de Europa (1999) eand Reformar : Dois Anos de Governo (2004). Prime Minister of Portugal from 2002 to 2004, year in which he replaced Romano Prodi as President of the European Commission.
